PITTSBURGH (Oct. 7, 2024) — Pittsburgh Riveters SC will hold its first open combine from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 at the AHN Montour Sports Complex in Coraopolis.

The combine is open to women age 18 or older who wish to try out to be part of Pittsburgh’s newest soccer team, which begins play in the USL W League in May 2025. Head coach Scott Gibson, sporting director Dan Visser and additional Riveters staff will evaluate players during the combine and provide feedback. Players selected from the combine could be called back to a future invitational tryout at a later date or offered a roster spot on the team for 2025.

Registration for the combine is now open. The cost to participate is $125 per player, but a special early bird rate of $100 is offered to players who sign up before Nov. 29. College or high-level youth soccer experience is highly recommended, though not required.

PITTSBURGH (Oct. 2, 2024) — Pittsburgh Riveters SC has its first player committed to join the club for its inaugural season, University of North Carolina junior and United States youth international outside back Tessa Dellarose.

Dellarose, 20, is currently in-season with the Tar Heels. She is a graduate of nearby Brownsville High School and the Riverhounds Development Academy, and now she is slated to return to Pittsburgh for the upcoming USL W League season. Her roster spot is pending W League and U.S. Soccer approval after registration opens for the 2025 season.

“I am extremely excited to be back in Pittsburgh representing the city and the Riveters in their inaugural season,” Dellarose said. “It is an exciting team for women’s sports in Pittsburgh, and I am honored to be a part of the expansion. This city means so much to me and my career, so to have the opportunity to help jumpstart the USL W campaign is amazing. I want to thank Pittsburgh and the Riveters organization for all their support, and I can’t wait to get started!”

A decorated player since her time with the Riverhounds Academy, Dellarose made an impact immediately in her first year at UNC, earning All-ACC Third Team and ACC All-Freshman Team honors. She played in every match as a sophomore and has started every match of UNC’s 11-1 start to this season.

Away from her college team, Dellarose also has made eight appearances for the U.S. Under-20 National Team, including every match of the team’s run to the final of the 2023 CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship. She also turned heads last summer in The Soccer Tournament, earning Most Valuable Player honors and scoring the winning goal in the final for the team US Women, playing alongside retired U.S. National Team players such as Ali Krieger and Heather O’Reilly in the ESPN-televised event.

There is not a better person or player to build the Riveters team culture around, as she is a fearless leader, competitor and role model,” Riveters SC head coach Scott Gibson said. “As an RDA alum, Tessa understands the expectations that we have, and she shares in our goals and vision for the future. Her current experience at UNC, coupled with her success at the US National Team level, makes her the type of person and player that we want in our building.”

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 25, 2024) — Pittsburgh Riveters SC has named Scott Gibson as the first head coach in the team’s history, as preparations for Pittsburgh’s new women’s soccer team kick into gear ahead of the Riveters’ inaugural 2025 season in the USL W League.

Gibson currently serves as the Director of the Riverhounds Academy and the head of the Academy’s girls program in the Elite Clubs National League. He has played a part in the development of more than 100 young women who have progressed to college soccer careers, including top athletes at elite programs, such as North Carolina, Notre Dame, Pitt, Rutgers and Indiana. More than a half dozen girls from the Hounds Academy have been invited to U.S. Youth National Team camps, and in the past year, two have represented the United States in competition — Tessa Dellarose in the U-20 age group and Sierra Dupre at the U-16 level.

With that track record of development and the strong connections he has forged with his players and with college coaches nationally, Gibson was the ideal fit to lead the Riveters into their first year of competition.

His wealth of coaching experience and the strong bonds he’s formed with our Academy players made him the obvious choice to lead us into our inaugural season. We’re lucky to have someone of his caliber as such a pivotal member of our organization,” said Dan Visser, Riverhounds and Riveters Sporting Director.

“I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity and responsibility to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Riveters. Having witnessed firsthand the growth of the women’s game over the past 15 years in Pittsburgh, this is another step forward in the overall vision that we have as a club,” Gibson said. “In 2012, we launched our first girls academy team with the hope that one day we could provide a pathway to players, and the Riveters will now provide that. I am excited to get to work with our incredible staff to make this a team that our community and supporters will be proud to get behind.”

A native of Saltburn, England, Gibson came to the U.S. to play collegiately at Duquesne University. After his college career and a stint as a pro player with the Riverhounds, he moved into his role as Riverhounds Academy Director, a position he has held since its inception in 2007. As the director, Gibson has overseen the growth of the Academy from its roots as a training program to a comprehensive developmental and team model serving more than 1,100 boys and girls annually.

Teams that Gibson coached include the first Hounds girls team, which in 2013 won the U-15 US Club Soccer National Championship, as well as the 2007 Girls team that reached the final of the ECNL North American Cup in 2023. He also served as an assistant coach with the Riverhounds pro team during the 2014 season, and he has been selected to coach in the ECNL’s National Selection Game — all-star events at the league’s annual college showcases — in Houston in 2023 and Dallas in 2024.

Gibson will continue as the Hounds’ Academy Director in addition to leading the Riveters, who will extend the pathway for girls in the region to continue their career in women’s soccer. The Riveters will begin play in May 2025, and news will be announced in the coming month about tryout opportunities, players joining the team and more.

PITTSBURGH (Sept. 18, 2024) — Pittsburgh’s newest addition to the sports scene, its USL W League team, has been officially named the Pittsburgh Riveters. Donning the city’s iconic black and yellow colors, the team revealed its name and logo today during a virtual unveiling, marking the beginning of an exciting new era for women’s soccer in the Steel City.

Chosen through a community-wide “Name the Team” poll, the Riveters emerged with a clear majority out of multiple fan-submitted options, capturing 53 percent of nearly 10,000 votes cast. The name pays homage to Pittsburgh’s proud industrial heritage, while the team’s bold logo incorporates the iconic image of Rosie the Riveter, a symbol of strength, resilience, and female empowerment dating back to World War II.

The popular image of Rosie the Riveter first gained recognition in a 1943 poster with the slogan “We Can Do It,” created by J. Howard Miller, a Pittsburgh-area native, for Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company. Originally designed to boost worker morale during wartime, Rosie has since evolved into a lasting emblem of women’s contributions to the workforce and society at large, appearing on magazine covers, postage stamps and across popular culture. She remains a timeless symbol of empowerment, and the Pittsburgh Riveters Soccer Club proudly embodies her spirit on the soccer field.

“Rosie the Riveter is more than just an image from our past, she’s a symbol of what we believe in as an organization,” said Jeff Garner, President of Pittsburgh Riveters SC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. “The resilience, unity, and courage she represents are the same traits we want our players and fans to embrace as we embark on this new chapter for Pittsburgh sports. This team is not only honoring history but also creating its own path for future generations.”

Set to begin play in the 2025 USL W League season beginning in May, the Riveters will play their home matches at Highmark Stadium. The senior-level First Team will serve as a vital stepping stone for young women aspiring to reach the highest levels of soccer, domestically and internationally.

“We’re already hard at work building the inaugural Riveters’ team and are very excited about the level of talent we’ll be able to showcase on the field next summer,” said Dan Visser, Sporting Director of the Riveters and Riverhounds. “We’re confident this special group of women will not only give fans something to cheer about, but also inspire the next generation of young girls in Western Pennsylvania and beyond.”
